What inspired you to choose a career in game design?
I’ve loved video games since I was a kid, and this led to me launching a career as a software programmer. I found that I was more proficient in designing algorithms than paying attention to syntax, so I transitioned to the Game Industry as an AI Designer.
Whether it’s work or personal life, what are you most proud of?
As cliche as it sounds, I’m humbled to be part of the team here at Nyan Heroes. I have the privilege of working with some of the brightest minds in the industry, people who have shaped and defined the games I have loved playing for years. To be able to contribute to a new IP alongside such talented individuals is truly an honor.
What is one key defining feature that excites you the most about Nyan Heroes?
Cats-in-Mechs. The concept may seem crazy, but it’s always exciting to work on a project that challenges the boundaries of existing gameplay.
In your opinion, what game direction is key to making Nyan Heroes a successful video game?
Overall, I believe that the key to game direction is achieving the core gameplay that aligns with the game’s concept. To truly capture the essence of cats-in-mechs, the core gameplay must reflect this theme. If not, the game would simply be a typical shooter game with mech skins.
How do you make sure that the vision of the game in a fully remote work environment is kept at AAA quality?
I trust my team of seasoned AAA developers to do their jobs and provide them with the autonomy and clear direction they need to excel. Micro-management is not my style, as I believe that empowering experts to do what they do best is the key to success.
How do you stay updated and aware of new trends and developments in the video games industry?
As an avid gamer, I enjoy playing a wide variety of games across different genres and platforms. To keep up with the latest trends, I regularly follow both consumer and professional websites, as well as watch game streams and attend conferences. It is hard work to stay up to date! 🙂
What’s one thing that is wrong about the video games industry that needs to be fixed?
Game design! Or rather, people’s perspective of game design. Many people, including those within the gaming industry, believe that game design simply involves coming up with a series of cool ideas. However, game design is a complex process that involves various factors and requires a lot of work. Reducing this process to just “cool ideas” can be frustrating for designers.
What is the best piece of advice anyone has ever given to you in the video games industry?
Throughout my career, I have received a lot of valuable advice. However, the one that resonates with me the most is to consistently strive to improve. It’s not exclusive to the games industry, but it sure has been the most helpful for me. In our industry, dinosaurs come to life when people start thinking they know it all.
What is one thing about your favorite game you would change to make it better?
That’s an easy one. More content! I don’t have just one favorite game, but with all the ones I love, I have the same problem: they finish too soon.
